The Humane Society of the United States is involved in more than keeping animals which have been rescued for people to come and adopt. HSUS’ work goes beyond supporting the local animal shelters in doing their work. The simple words that are used to illustrate the complex work of the organization is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
Thousnds of species exist today in the world today. The HSUS work is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. Although most of the organizations work is carried out in the United States, HSUS has extended to other countries with some its work being to rescue some of the animals in the Ocean. Some of the animals the organization has participated in rescuing have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. The activities that the animals are involved are many and these are some of them.
Another major work f the HSUS is to work with the pet owners at home and also providing support to various local animal shelters through the utilization of the various animal professionals which it has. HSUS has also been in the forefront in pushing for pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. These laws are meant to curb animal cruelty. Animals are also victims when a disaster such as when the Tsunami hit the South East Asia in 2004. In order to rescue animals in disaster cases, the HSUS is always prepared with a team that can travel to the affected areas whether locally or internationally. The organization also thinks about the welfare of backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice and raccoons by educating homeowners of how to peacefully coexist with them.
The Humane Society of the United States was not the first to be involved in the work of helping animals. The Society for the prevention of cruelty of animals is the first known organization know to advocate for animal rights in the U.S. Prior to this organization, there had not been another such organization in the U.S. Subsequently, more organizations came up. In 1887, delegates from these organizations agreed to collapse and form the American Humane Association. The disagreements among some members led to some of the leaving and forming HSUS.
The main goal of the HSUS was to ensure that all types of animal cruelty are eliminated in the whole world. The first work of HSUS was to push for the de legislation of law that required animal shelters to turn over animals to be used for research work. The organization has led to passing of many laws that protect animals. The various laws includes those that are against mistreatment of animals to those that protect the endangered species, learn more here.
